Accessible Parliament: Building Trust Through Stronger Media Engagement

Effective communication between parliamentarians and the media is a cornerstone of transparency, accountability and public trust. Recognising this, Members of Parliament, journalists and policy experts came together for a roundtable discussion focused on strengthening communication between the Oliy Majlis and the media.

The dialogue highlighted that the media is not merely a channel for information, but a key partner in informing citizens, encouraging constructive debate and supporting democratic institutions. Participants stressed that open, honest and timely communication helps counter misinformation, improves public understanding of reforms and promotes evidence‑based policy discussions.

Discussions covered media expectations, parliamentary communication practices, budget transparency and the growing role of digital tools, including artificial intelligence, in parliamentary work. Participants shared practical approaches to shaping clear messages, responding effectively during crises and making parliamentary processes more accessible and credible to the public.

The roundtable also emphasised the importance of listening — both parliamentarians and journalists committed to more active, two‑way engagement that builds trust and strengthens cooperation. Effective communication is essential to explaining complex reforms and ensuring citizens understand how decisions affect their lives. This first‑of‑its‑kind dialogue generated strong interest and practical ideas, laying the groundwork for continued collaboration to strengthen trust between parliament, the media and the public.
