From Data Literacy to Data Leadership

The UK-funded Effective Governance for Economic Development (EGED) Programme continues to strengthen the role of media in promoting transparency and accountability through data-driven journalism.

Earlier this year, the Modern Journalism Development Centre (MJDC), in partnership with Development Policy Institute (DPI), launched the first Data Accelerator in February 2025, equipping 28 journalists with practical skills to collect, analyse, and visualize economic data.

Fast forward to November 2025, and Phase 2 of the Data Accelerator has just concluded in Tashkent! This three-day intensive brought together journalists and experts to co-create impactful media projects on:

  • Transparent public spending and procurement
  • Income generation for people with disabilities and public-private partnerships (PPPs)
  • Territorial equality between urban and rural areas

The final day featured hands-on sessions with advanced tools, followed by pitching sessions where 10 teams presented data-driven stories addressing pressing social and economic issues from gaps in education access to transparency in government tenders.

The best five projects will receive scholarships and mentorship for publication in national and regional media, ensuring that data journalism continues to amplify citizen voices and foster accountability.

The Data Accelerator is more than training – it is a platform for collaboration, innovation, and impact, empowering journalists to turn data into stories that matter.
