Strengthening Statistical Leadership for Better Public Governance in Kazakhstan

Strong statistical institutions require not only modern methodologies and technologies, but also capable leaders who can drive organizational change and build a culture of innovation. Investing in leadership is therefore an investment in stronger public institutions and more effective, evidence-based policymaking.

As part of these efforts, a Statistical Leadership Training was held in Astana from 13 to 20 June 2024, bringing together managers from the regional statistical offices and the headquarters of the Bureau of National Statistics of Kazakhstan. The programme was delivered by experts from the UK Office for National Statistics.

The training focused on strengthening leadership and management capacities within Kazakhstan’s National Statistical System, equipping participants with practical approaches to leading teams, managing change, and supporting institutional development.

By strengthening leadership across the statistical system, the initiative contributes to building more resilient and responsive public institutions capable of producing high-quality data that underpin economic policy and public decision-making.

The training was delivered under the Effective Governance for Economic Development (EGED) Programme in Kazakhstan, funded by the UK Government. Through partnerships, knowledge exchange, and institutional capacity development, the Programme supports the modernization of public institutions and helps lay the foundations for more effective, transparent, and data-driven governance.
