The EGED Programme supported the local initiatives in Kyrgyzstan

On January 2025, the Development Policy Institute (DPI) has summed up the results of the Local Initiative competition, announced in November 2024 among the municipalities of the At-Bashy district of the Naryn region and the Nookat district of the Osh region. The competition was announced within the framework of the Effective Governance for Economic Development (EGED) Programme, funded by the UK Government through the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Development (FCDO).

The main objective of the competition was to stimulate active participation of local communities in improving living conditions, involving citizens in the decision-making process, and creating conditions for sustainable development of the local economy. Applications described successful experience in implementing initiatives aimed at improving local infrastructure, helping vulnerable groups of the population, supporting small businesses through joint efforts of government bodies, local entrepreneurs, and civil society.

By decision of the competition committee, 5 local initiatives were recognized as winners and prize winners of the competition and awarded corresponding places and prizes:

1st place – Ak-Muz municipality, At-Bashy district, application “Cleanliness starts with you”. With the prize money of 70,000 soms, local government bodies plan to purchase LED lamps for street lighting.

2nd place – Kara-Tash municipality, Nookat district, application “Sewing workshop – opportunities for women in the village”. With the prize money of 50,000 soms, local government bodies plan to purchase an electric generator, heaters and cutting scissors for the workshop.

2nd place – At-Bashy municipality, At-Bashy district, application “Social platform “Uluu muun” – caring for the older generation”. The local government bodies plan to use the prize money of 50,000 soms to purchase musical equipment (speakers, microphone, amplifiers) for cultural events in the center.

3rd place – At-Bashy municipality, At-Bashy district, application “Implementation of the PSER as a tool for municipal development”. The local government bodies plan to use the prize money of 30,000 soms to purchase musical equipment for public meetings and gatherings.

3rd place – Mirmakhmudov municipality, Nookat district, application “Professional courses – opportunities for youth and vulnerable families”. The local government bodies plan to use the prize money of 30,000 soms to purchase the tools necessary for practical training in the courses.
